Leonard Norman Cohen (September 21, 1934 – November 7, 2016) was a Canadian singer-songwriter, poet and novelist.

THE PROPHET OF DESPAIR: “He once read an ad in National Lampoon titled Leonard Cohen: The Prophet of Despair. “I laughed my head off,” he told me years ago, “because I thought it was the Lampoon spoofing me. Then I saw the same ad in Rolling Stone, and I wasn’t laughing any more.”

CHELSEA HOTEL #424 : Leonard Cohen wrote “Chelsea Hotel #2” in 1974, which makes reference to a romantic encounter he had with musician Janis Joplin in room #424 years earlier

SUZANNE: "Suzanne" was inspired by Cohen's platonic relationship with Suzanne Verdal, the then-girlfriend of sculptor Armand Vaillancourt.Cohen performed it as his debut single, from his 1967 album Songs of Leonard Cohen. Many other artists have recorded versions, and it has become one of the most-covered songs in Cohen's catalogue.
