Maria Callas, (December 2, 1923 – September 16, 1977) was a New York-born Greek soprano, one of the most renowned and influential opera singers of the 20th century. 

MEDEA: is a French language opéra-comique by Luigi Cherubini.The opera was premiered on 13 March 1797 at the Théâtre Feydeau, Paris. Perhaps the most famous 20th-century revival of the work was in Florence in 1953, with Maria Callas in the title role. Callas learned and performed the role within a week, to critical acclaim. The production was so successful that the Teatro alla Scala decided to stage this opera during the opening week of its 1953-1954 season. In 1969, the Italian filmmaker Pier Paolo Pasolini cast Callas in her only non-operatic acting role, as the Greek mythological character of Medea, in his film by that name.

The theatre is regarded as one of the leading opera and ballet theaters in the world.Callas made her official debut at La Scala in Verdi's I vespri siciliani on opening night in December 1951, and this theatre became her artistic home throughout the 1950s
