Eric Hilliard Nelson (May 8, 1940 – December 31, 1985) was an American rock and roll star, musician, and singer-songwriter. He was one of the top "teen idols" of the 1950s He placed 53 songs on the BillboardHot 100, and its predecessors, between 1957 and 1973.

POOR LITTLE FOOL: is a rock and roll song written by Sharon Sheeley and first recorded by Ricky Nelson in 1958. Sheeley wrote the song when she was fifteen years old. She had met Elvis Presley, and he encouraged her to write. It was based on her disappointment following a short-lived relationship with a member of a popular singing duo. Sheeley sought Ricky Nelson to record the tune. She drove to his house, and claimed her car had broken down. He came to her aid, and she sprang the song on him. Her version was at a much faster tempo than his recording. It was the first number-one song on Billboard magazine's then-new Hot 100 chart, replacing the magazine's Jockeys and Top 100 charts.

N711Y:  His life ended tragically in 1985 when his tour plane caught fire and crashed near a highway in DeKalb, Texas, killing him and six others.N711Y is the tail number of his plane.Nelson dreaded flying but refused to travel by bus. In May 1985, he decided he needed a private plane and paid $118,000 for a fourteen-seat 1944 Douglas DC-3 (N711Y) that had once belonged to the DuPont family and later to Jerry Lee Lewis. The plane had been plagued by a history of mechanical problems.

“RAVE ON FOR ME.”: Nelson closed his last show with Rave On, the song by Buddy Holly, the early rock hero who died at 22 in a 1959 plane crash. Responding to calls for more, Ricky walked out on stage twice to take a bow. His last words to the crowd were “Rave on for me.”
