River Jude Phoenix (born Bottom; August 23, 1970 – October 31, 1993) was an American actor, musician, and activist.Phoenix's status as a teen idol and promising young actor, and his subsequent premature death, made him a frequent subject in popular culture media.

CITY OF NIGHT: The origins of My Own Private Idaho came from John Rechy's 1963 novel, City of Night, which featured characters who were street hustlers who did not admit to being gay. My Own Private Idaho is considered a landmark film in the New Queer Cinema movement, since its 1991 release, the film has grown in popularity and been deemed as a cult classic. Notably for its then-taboo subject matter and avant-garde style.

VIPER ROOM: On October 31, 1993, Phoenix collapsed and died of combined drug intoxication following a drug overdose on the sidewalk outside the West Hollywood nightclub The Viper Room at the age of 23.

CHILDREN OF GOD: In 1973 his family joined a controversial Christian new religious cult, called the Children of God, as missionaries. In the late 1970s, River's family moved in with his grandparents in Florida. The family officially changed their name to Phoenix, after the mythical bird that rises from its own ashes, symbolizing a new beginning.
